People say this, but it's exactly like the New Testament in countless ways: there's historical stuff in there, mixed in with mythology, parables, reinterpretation and debate of Torah law (or Old Testament law by analogy), commentary on fulfillments of prophecy, future prophecies, and so on. I do agree with your last sentence, as you are the only other anon I've seen point out that the mere pilpul and discussion of certain subject matter by itself is absurd / implicitly shows such wicked things were done before enough times to be a matter of debate.
