anyone want to hear how awesome i built my little 1bedroom appartment? it has become a place of pure practicality, iterated upon many times. like a personal professional storage facility.

i build everything myself from brick and board with the exception of 1 couch and 2 chairs that i did not make myself.

so basically all my walls are shelving and in those shelves i use a few very specific boxes i can get for free from the supermarket.

for bricks i use white gasbeton bricks, which are lighter and they have the perfect size: 60cm length, 10cm width, 25cm height. the standardization of these sizes is what enables my simple system to exist. this size is only sold in one big construction store where i live.

for board i use these cheap white boards they sell in any construction store, filled with pressed together sawdust.

i have three full length shelves, which build from the stones in their uncut length, 60cm. luckily this is a good length for my arm to reach in and grab something or clean it, especially when i try to weave a power-cable through one of the shelves. i always leave 10cm space to the wall so that cables and multi-outlets can go behind easily.

one is purely a shelf with one board in the middle missing, so that i can put items inside as tall as 2*25cm=50cm

second is my "closet". just put a piece of iron scaffolding (long iron stick) on top of two towers of stones but with 4 levels of regular shelving underneath, which i use to hang coat hangers from.

third is my bed. it is a matress on not one but two full sized (meaning 60cm width) shelves that are both 200cm long. with a little gap in the middle it perfectly fits the dimensions of the matress (140cm *200cm) so i am sleeping on top of a shelf i built. unfortunately i did not build this from the white sawdust board but from small 2m long woodbeams, which don't slide as good as the white board. if i built it again i would also build it from the white sawdustboard.

picture semi-related. it is the same style i build in but uses something that looks like glass. this stuff i am using is so strong, they use it to build houses from. it is brittle and easily damaged though; as if made from glass in a sense.

my longest wall is one big shelf with a few boards missing in the middle so i can use it as the table. at this table i am sitting right now with my laptop. it is half length, so only 30 cm deep. that means i cut the stones (60x25x10) into halfstones (30x25x10) with a specialized saw. long saw with big teeth. i cut each stone once so i can build shorter shelving with it in the same principle though. as it turns out the halflength is quite useful with the boxes i have accumulated. i can build them as tall as i want so i build them that they are only slightly taller then me, that way i can always reach on top and place something on top.

one big thing i forgot to mention is that the little shelving finally gave me access to the space above a heater, i could never place something good there before i custom made the shelves. i build it around the heater and that gave me a lot of space to work with.

i made two more of these halfshelves across each other to fill the space next to my bathroom. half shelves are awesome when trying to pack boxes, often i don't have so many belongings that can go together in a box that makes sense and putting it into a bigger one, would waste a lot of space or i would have to put something in with it that does not fit. more importantly though, the smaller and more convenient the box is, the better it is to work with it, to take it out and put it back in often. small boxes are awesome with high-traffic stuff.

in the supermarket i buy, they get almost everything in cardboard boxes of varying sizes. once the customers grabbed the stuff out of the boxes, an empty box remains in the shelves and over the course of the day, the employees of the supermarket grab that box and throw it into a paper-condensing machine. when i am in the supermarket though and i see an empty box, i grab it and when they have 4 empty boxes i am grabbing 4 empty boxes! they appreciate this, less boxes for them to get rid off. i only care for two kind of crates in the supermarket though:

>banana crates
which are 50cm*40cm*24cm. so they fit inside the fullsize shelf but they waste 10cm. that's not all too bad though because the banana crate is an absolute joy to handle for me. it is such a useful size to pack stuff into the truck. if it was longer, it would not be as comfy to carry it around. nice thing about the banana crate is that it fits also inside the halfsize shelf sticking out a bit. so in a pinch it can go inside the halfsize.

banana crate probably most people know about but i found one that they use to sell 8 one liter boxes of fruit juice in that is perfect:

>juice crates
which are 30cm*24cm*15cm. that fits amazing into halfsize. with 30cm it uses the entire depth of the halfsize. with 24cm it also uses the height perfectly with enough space to get a finger in on the top. but since they are open on the side, they can be accessed without having to take the box out, which is a huge advantage over all the other more closed boxes. the width of 15cm turned out useful, fitting a lot of things i would have though might not.

there is also watermelon crates which have a better length but they are too tall. if i had a tablesaw and could easily make them 24cm height, i might grab them but the best crates to use the entire 60cm depth of a fullsize is just 2 juice crates held together with strong tape. i have like 30 of these frankenstein ducttape boxes and they are awesome. they are so useful to group stuff together that i would only use together, like little physical file folders that hold my belongings so i can find them easier; which is the reason i am going through all this trouble. i always know where all my stuff is and i can easily find it.

this almost shows a juice crate. see how open they are in the front? that's very useful to put stuff in and out easily i have found.

also i use clear plastic boxes. 2 of them, one stacked on the other perfectly fit inside the halfsize too, which is nice for stuff i want to protect from dust like sunglasses or gloves or old hardware.

i also made a shelf next to my appartmentdoor which is even smaller then halfsize, it is thirdsize. depth of 20cm. i used the big saw to cut the stones twice and i used a thinner stone for this so that i did not have to saw as many times; also my cuts are not as precise as the factory edges. i could fit 120cm boards in between this little nook in the wall. the size now perfectly fits little clear plastic containers i bought grapes in. i collected like 200 of those and use them as a specialized shelves for adapters and screws and little clamps and zipties and rubber bands and pieces of string or wire and all these other useful little things i never could find before i custom made the little shelf.

i realized i forgot a part about the boards. the boards are sold in a few different widths in the construction store:

>60cm very useful because then the widgh of the board fits perfectly on the length of a fullsized brick. these bricks are rather large but since they are made from gasbeton, the are light so i can easily carry one.
>50cm not that useful
>40cm not that useful
>30cm very useful because then it fits perfectly with a halfsized brick
>20cm very useful because then it fits perfectly with a thirdsize brick
>10cm not that useful and i would only use it, if built inside a tiny space that has 3 sides wall and one side access because otherwise this might tumble too easy

so the brick fits perfectly with the board and the board fits perfectly with the box, unless it is bananabox.

for my big kitchen wall i have used different stones and different width of board to create half of a work-surface with narrow shelving behind it, trying to make the most out of the little space i had. so the bottom is very thick, 60cm deep for the taped boxes. and about halfway up it becomes narrower. 30cm deep for stuff of varied size like pots, blenders, hotpots, gadgets, pans, plates. it has various sizes of 30cm stone to create small levels where the few plates i own can rest without sharing space with something, which would require me to lift something to reach the plates, which i would consider failure.

i build my sink in a similar manner, a little table from brick and board but it is annoyingly flimsy, maybe i can improve upon it some more but the rest is awesome. i once had a little kitchen island made in a similar manner but i replaced it with a little height adjustable table so i have another place to sit beside my computer, which i forgot to mention i just assembled from ikea.

nice glamourshot of the saw inside such a brick but it is a thin brick, 5cm width i would assume, i use ones that are twice as thick because i think they look good. the white stones with the white boards, i can't deny that there is some aesthetic to it. it first reminds of old greek pillars but it has it's own style.

that's amateur ridicule, rather speak about what you have made. i didn't make the bricks and wood myself but i did find the most efffortless and cheap way to make custom shelving. i used real wood before but now i prefer the cheap boards because they boxes slide so good on them.

also your ridicule did not include how good the free boxes are matching with the shelfsize. because you can find boxes and they aren't expensive but when you need 400 boxes you might want free ones that fit good.

see they use these stones for housing. i think this is widely used stuff. if i had to build a wall and it would not have to be that sturdy of a wall i would try this stuff first.

this superior way of building was heavily inspired by playing factorio for thousands of hours and also cannabis.

because the boxes are so compatible with all shelves, it is very easy to just swap two boxes in different parts of the room; everything fits in everything by design.

why does that matter? so i can easily put stuff right were i would use it or at least next to other stuff of a similar nature so can narrow where to search for it.

if all you own is one backpack with 2 pairs of clothing, this level of assburgery would not be necessary. but when i walk into my supermarket and can buy a fat metal tool for less then a meal, i can't say no to this and this in turn requires me to have this ridiculous luxurious personal infrastructure. it is too annoying to get access to tools to be a minimalist. minimalist means not owning tools and that sucks, i feel it is against my nature.

video of you pretending to do your share while others build things
i have these small see-through plastic containers that fit exactly where a juicecrate fits. since they are 11cm high, two of them stacked fit in the space of one juice crate.

that's nice because sometimes crates have so little in them that i can fit two juice crates into two plastic boxes, stack them on top of each other and put them in the slot where one of the crates used to be.
Some fine german autism in here, even a factorio mention. But tell me, how can you split 100cm into three equal parts?

fold both sides over so each edge aligns with the other side's fold, that's plenty precise
happening! breaking news:

i built the second big shelf made from board and brick for my father in his storage and now the place looks less like a messie's trash heap. i collected like 40 banana crates for him and helped him organize his shit into those cates and put the crates into shelves. feels good. i wish everyone finds something that works this nice.
