Coincidentally, I watched a video yesterday on the 100 Monkey Effect.

The gist of the story is that when a critical mass of monkeys learned to wash their food in water, monkeys of the same species but living on a different island with no physical contact between the two groups also started washing their food in water.
This reminded me of a passage from the article you linked to.
