I can't speak for everyone in GATE, since I was in the precursor class, LEAP, but I can possibly sort out some of the dross for you.
AMA, but I'll only be here for an hour--I've been on too long today anyway.

So, here's the skinny:
You had to test into the 98th-99th percentile in grade school, either from the CAT test, or another comprehensive skills measure.
this set you up for being in the "Track"
You likely were part of EC and TAG classes like Olympics of the Mind, serendipity spot, or other high intelligence "clubs" ; Mathletes, Chess Club, etc.
Eventually, after some length of academic record,(including possibly becoming bored with normal and AP classes,) your parents were approached about testing you for LEAP/GATE.
From there, you were given a curated Intelligence test, either Ravens progressive matrices, or the standard Wechsler II or WISC-R.
Then, If you passed, you then took the class as part of your normal schedule. I honestly don't remember if it was M-F, MWF, or T,TH, but it was one of those.

Again, I was in a precursor program, and had been in experimental classes since the first grade.
1) The zener cards are missing the circle, that rang out like an alarm immediately.
2) Lots of Blue eyes, but mine are hazel, there were green ones as well.(12 students in my class)
3) I don't personally have much of an occipital bun, but I was noticed early in 2nd and 3rd grade for racing through my math homework with a friend, doing it all in our heads.
Not a big Math fan but I was fast tracked through AP Highschool maths.
*This may play into the later destruction of the unwanted trope, As I could never understand, and neither could my English and reading teachers, why I wasn't put into AP literature classes.
4) No birth complications, I was a ridiculously easy birth according to mom-- but I was a night birth, Full moon, and had the placental sac on like the instant babby vid
5) No near death experiences, I don't think, but I have had very vivid dreams of drowning since I was a small child, not frequently, but the kind that sticks with you for weeks and you never forget?
6)yep, as stated before I don't know how often the class actually was, and I don't think I can remember a single full class, although we did get to watch Hitchcock's 'REAR WINDOW' right before winter break one year.
7) covered windows-sort of, our classroom had very high windows that you couldn't see through without standing on the table.

9)Law enforcement-Yeah I always wondered about that.
I wasn't particularly overt, but I did get a lot of warnings instead of tickets, and was even searched once by an entire Sheriffs Department, 7 officers who were hell bent to "get us" even though I drove up to the Building to let a friend drop off things where an Ex-GF was incarcerated.
I somehow talked my way out of that one, even though there was a ¼oz. of weed in the car and we'd just come from a Native American wedding ceremony(friends mom remarried) Weird, they just walked away, no sorry, no explanation, just walked away AFTER searching the car and, absurdly, finding nothing.
10) I'm no genius, but you needed a 98th percentile on the CAT AND 130+ on the RPM test.
The number means fuck-all. I can be 148 one day, and sleep deprive me for 2 days, with a shitty diet and toxic social environment and I FEEL like good ol' 98.
That's rare but everyone has their "Genius" and their bio-rhythms.

*Most kids run into SOMEthing as a toddler that leaves a mark--That doesn't track as anything, neither does the "headphones" as ALL children had a hearing test with those specialized overpriced headphones, mine was done in the nurses office, just like every other kid that day.

And a lot of kids got the fluoride rinse, that's what it was, it TRIED to be bubblegum or cherry flavored? maybe? but that's what that was.
It IS possible that later GATE kids got something else but most elementary schools had the fluoride rinse, toothbrushing with disclosing tablets, and then a re-Brushing. on "Dental Hygiene DAY"
Seems like something to throw out to drag in confused "Was I in GATE??" people, since it's an almost universal experience here.
