Sounds a lot like the 'komodo dragon'-esque or the drakes (wingless dragon) that are said to roam in the Hopi Cave Tunnel Complex System, which is said to run all under North America over 100,000 (natural) miles. Much resembling the Deep Roads (of the dwarves). In one incident I've heard first hand testimony of them and their danger, particularly relating from the entrances around Taos New Mexico. "Do not venture under there", my friend said, "without automatic firearms and a machete." He continued, "They are fast, can grow larger than 7 foot long, and eat flesh." This folk myth is not unheard of or uncorrelated around the indigenous of the mid/south-west.
