The United States has two historic legacy narratives. One of Rosa Parks and the melting pot, the other of the nativists who have written such works as the dispossessed majority, the unprotected class, alien nation and suicide of a superpower. It isn't the rejection of the MLK story which concerns me, it's that it seems like the American right is uncomfortable being heirs to the nativist Legacy. It's like they want to change the debate without acknowledging the intellectual legacies which galvanized support for them.

Every nationalist learns the language of identity at the foot of the American far right. There were always issues, but this is the product identity and nation minded dissidents actually want to buy. It's troubling to think the Americans seem to view it as something shameful to wash away. You cannot be at war with your supporters and expect to win their love in the end
