Our beloved trollface could do with a replacement. It's a bit MKUltra, and doesn't lend itself well to OurImage. Ideas? Perhaps a cat girl?

We could try out some quality cat-girls. Keeping the Alice and Wonderland theme might help. I'll work on some designs. Maybe a cross between Alice, Cheshire Cat, and a cat-girl design might produce something that's not shit.

The simpler the better. An anime girl is fine but there's a reason 4chan doesn't use yotsuba as their logo. Personally I've had several thoughts around various birds as the logo. >Spitballing Pretend we have no logos rn. Where would your mind go?

Fair enough. My brain for some reason misinterpreted the title as 'mascot' when seeing the picrel. I'll play with some designs with birds.
>Spitballing Pretend we have no logos rn. Where would your mind go?
I'll toss out some random designs here later in this vein, and see what my subconscious comes up with. Obviously, zero offense taken if they are quickly discarded and rejected. I'd like more anons to do the same, if they're willing.

It's not a bird, but platypuses are neat. Not sure if I've seen one used as a logo before. I like the toucan idea since it rhymes with chan like other anons are saying.

I'm terrible at drawing animals, let alone anthropomorphizing them as figures, but was curious what an inverted color toucan with the color schemes of OC would look like.

WTF, guys..
You guys want a bunch of anons to just shitcan all the stuff they've been creating for the last 3½ months?
Okay, sure, the AI Cheshire is a little creepy, But Chans used to be looked at with a little fear and respect. The unvarnished truth is NOT a pleasant thing to behold, nor is it looked upon with favor by the midwit masses.
The SYMBOLISM is formative and important here: The trickster messenger who can disappear at will, and you guys want to turn it into Barbie dolls or a fucking breakfast cereal mascot?
The logo and Favicon should be simple, just like the 4 leaf clover, or the Wizard's hat.
But if you guys want to just change the mascot 4 months in, you may as well be niggers pandering NEW COKE or some shit.

I too have done a lot for this chan already. In a matter of pure hilarity, I even completed a banner featuring Cheshire right before this announcement. A removed layer is proof in my picrels. So, I'm speaking to you on an empathetic basis.
>But Chans used to be looked at with a little fear and respect. The unvarnished truth is NOT a pleasant thing to behold, nor is it looked upon with favor by the midwit masses.
I don't believe this is actually as true as you think it is, at least in terms of symbols, logos, and mascots anyways. We can cite 4chan using the four-leaf clover, Yotsuba, Suiseiseki, and others as moe just as much as Anon or others were intimidating and mysterious. Part of its success was broadcasting both depending on context and need. I see no reason why your work can't continue to be used as a mascot of its own (among others) when likewise the situation calls for it even if it's not the primary one.

In terms of optics, I do think there's some reasonable belief here that the current logo (especially the AI one for sure) simply scares off people in a not good way from the first impression. Secondly, by your own very argument, it broadcasts the idea of this chan being a threat to people we'd rather not be drawing the attention of at this stage. At a later time, it will be an assumed risk which we can weather.

Making this call four months in by ripping the band-aid is better than tearing the titanium stitches if we were to wait longer. At bare minimum, collecting alternative designs for the future this early in the game seems reasonable to me even if the logo and mascot isn't immediately being shelved. You should reconsider leaving. I think you have a lot to further contribute.

Finally, I guarantee you there is actual ways of making a toucan intimidating if we really want to. Also, checked (twice).
Replies: >>1824 >>1826

The problem with Cheshire is twofold. It doesn't translate well as a favicon which makes it look like something from a crappy Halloween site. The second is the alice motif. While it might be positive, generally alice in wonderland lends itself to horrorshows, real and imagined. For imagined, American McGee's Alice while a very fun game, is disturbing and shows the general trajectory in fiction. Alice is also closely connected to a number of extremely horrific blackbox operations; Project Monarch, MKUltra, and any number of cults. That causes it to be a massive, unintended, red flag for experienced anons, who are precisely the sort this chan needs to grow.

It's perfectly fine to keep around, but it oughtn't to be the face. Also someone should create art of Ches killing a monarch butterfly. It'd make a good /x/ banner/mascot.

>>1823
Is right.

Your stuff is great and definitely inspired. It's a shame doge has poisoned the well so much.

On the subject of logos, most chans have moe theming, or are a hackoff of 4clover. We do want to be original and definitely want to avoid the sterility of modern web design.

Toucans are just an idea. Though they are quite vicious for how cute they are:

I'm going to counter-signal and stand up one more time on behalf of the platypus before letting the matter rest if no other anons bite. It is very cute both in its infant and adult stage, yet nevertheless the males pack a venomous punch in their hind legs. This hidden weapon kills animals and fucks up humans for weeks. Also, I have again never seen it used in any logo to my memory. And it is Australian— they're White and hands-down the Internet's longest standing best shit-posters before the advent of VPNs by ((( hostiles ))). They also have night vision. And they can swim, a very White trait.

Platypi are cool little buggers. Aside from Perry, there is very little popular usage. What do you envision as a logo?

Toucans have Fruit Loops and Guinness. If anons go with this, I'll try and mock up a head on, spread wing pic. Which would be more dynamic than something like:
>picrel
or the stock up the thread.

A very funny combination that just occurred to me is the Reichslader combined with a toucan design and colors, but that's probably very understandably not the best primary logo.
>Where could I learn more of this?
I'm afraid I can't give you any direct links, other than saying old screenshots and digging through the archives will show that Australians were well-known for trolling everyone combined with unexpected quality posts in the 2000's and 2010's. As places like 4skins' /pol/ got the attention of glowies, so too did their wish for political control through shills and bots, and I saw countless garbage posts come from them since 2015+ish. What I'm sure is pajeets and/or possibly wumao being hired by the swarm further did them in. A lot of posters under Scandinavian flags that are with certainty from VPNs have suffered the same fate.

Try angling the wings themselves at an angle, and let's see what it looks like. It may lose the 90 degree angle 'professional' aesthetic that I believe you're going for, but it'll give us some ideas of our boundaries for the swooping effect if we retrace it.

3. What would we name him?
Replies: >>1935
>>1934
1) They're substantially larger than modern wolves. A few other quirks.
2) I don't think this is a big concern: knowing a beautiful, majestic, and powerful thing is near extinction or is in threat of extinction has a strong message underlying it.
3) No idea. Was thinking 'Direi' as in 'Dear Diary', even though it's kind of retarded.

Our real concern is having this avatar being taken up by furfags, just like Ches, which the white toucan does not really have the risk of.

Breddy mush this.
There's also some seeming confusion on the difference between a LOGO and a MASCOT.
I can say I appreciate the effort some ITT are putting into this.
I'd just like to remind everyone that as a new site, new approaches and innovations, like say, having a mascot for every board, and a simplified, yet unifying logo/favicon is a possibility.
I'm not saying that's what it should be, just that we have the option of creating something that isn't a cookie-cutter Altchan.
>Honker the Goose for /mu/
>Chesh for /pol/ or maybe /x/
>Toucan son of Sam the Cereal Killer,(just kidding I like the design work you guys have put into that,) for...IDK?

Point is, there isn't a "set-in-stone" framework for mascots.
We DO need a favicon convertible LOGO however.
Just consider a "ZOom oUT" for a moment... Long term thinking.

>magpie
IDK...You may have hit on some GOLD here.
If you Extrapolate on the omen angle, that always has to do with number;

"One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told."
--English nursery rhyme

Being that Ourchan is inherently plural, I think the main negative connotation is fairly dash'd agin' Ye Stones.

From Wikipedia:
>Magpies are birds of various species of the family Corvidae. Like other members of their family, they are widely considered to be intelligent creatures. The Eurasian magpie, for instance, is thought to rank among the world's most intelligent creatures, and is one of the few non-mammalian species able to recognize itself in a mirror test. Magpies have shown the ability to make and use tools, imitate human speech, grieve, play games, and work in teams. They are particularly well known for their songs and were once popular as cagebirds. In addition to other members of the genus Pica, corvids considered magpies are in the genera Cissa, Urocissa, and Cyanopica.

Autism checking in with liking bird but thinking toucan is too stale.

I introduce the Red Winged Blackbird

it's behavior fits perfectly with our movement as well.

one activity these birds do is engage in mobbing, which is basically a bunch of them strategically messing with or taking out bigger enemies that are often usually the predators of these birds.

its in-line with what our movement is, against the machine.

I think the ouroboros would be a great idea for replacing the wreath. A two-headed ouroboros with the white toucan perched within it is likely what my submission will be for the contest later this month.
>>2096
Nice, ourchan is eternal.
Toucans remind me of jews. Also I don't think we should use an NSDAP logo, it's kind of cringe. I think the logo should be clean and simple, like 4chan's four leaf clover.

With that particular size and shape of the lettering, it kind of evokes the image of a single eyeball, which I don't think anons will vibe with. Maybe a wider radius of the 'O' could offset the effect. It looks better in a mockup with full text though.

here's a better attempt. sorry about the mspaint stretch pixelation, it sucks but I just did a fresh install of windows so I don't have GIMP or any nice fonts other than the default ones. Not sure if it looks too much like a supermarket logo, but I'm not much of a designer.

I think for the browser icon, it could just be a textless shining sun, it doesn't need an 'O', the sun is already round. It's classic, it's not subversive nor is it easy to subvert, it invokes the idea of a new day or a new dawn. We can even mascotize-it with sunglasses.

Would be better if someone could draw it instead though. I used a stock image for that.
A suggestion I have for the snake, if someone is willing to draw it, is to draw 17 scales for the snake. Each scale represents the currently existing boards on this website.
Or maybe just draw the snake with fewer scales to represent the total of boards when the site was created. I have no idea how many though.

>>2154
>I like this, though the snake invokes some similarity to 8kun which also uses a snake logo
Yeah, unfortunately. I was thinking that maybe this website could use ouroboros since there is "OUR" in the word.
I was kinda inspired by 4chan. It has a "four"-leaf clover as the logo.

Shallow interpretation. It's a symbol of eternity and cyclical nature with a lot of metaphysical context to it. Fitting given the political leaning of the site - one of the things that separates leftists/modernists from the right is that the right wing has a foundation of all things being cyclical, history repeating itself, etc, while the leftist position can be summarized in a famous quote by a famous commie nigger - "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice". They believe in a non-cyclical, changing metaphysic that will approach some vague, horrifying end goal.

Plus it starts with "Our" and that alone should be enough reason to use it.

My thoughts were that it would be best to distance the basic logo/mascot from something overtly political. The reason for this is because ourchan is intended to be an alternative to the general body of boards which comprised 4chan, not exclusively a political image board. Making something look like a coat-of-arms or an obvious military insignia would potentially limit outreach by presenting the iconographic "face" of the website as something much more focused on political discourse than it actually is.

My rules were that the image should be something that anybody can draw from memory, something that only uses a few high-contrast colors, does *not* contain overtly political imagery, should be "odd" but not excessively cute, does *not* have obvious symmetry in its design, and has to be somewhat abstract while still resembling the toucan enough for most people to immediately recognize it as such. The purpose of these restrictions is to make the icon interesting and memorable, but not ominous. People who see the image should be mildly curious, maybe finding the little bird "cute", but not much more than that... y'know, kinda like the four-leafed clover.

The last thing I'll say is that icons/logos are only as successful as the projects they're associated with. For symbols to become iconic, they need time to saturate in the general conscience of a population which associates particular activities, ideas and discourse with them. "Heraldry" and other battle-related icons limit outreach, and could potentially drive away enough curious visitors to undermine our attempts to establish a community here, preventing the longevity necessary for the icon to acquire "meaning" among the general public.

>>2480
Pic related is the same image with a hue altered to a dark, slightly desaturated green. What do you think? If people like this design, I'll refine it. I'm still interested in adding a tail, but I'm not sure if I want straight lines or anything protruding from the simple circle.

In order, high saturation/luminosity for the green and magenta, followed by an extremely high saturation for green and magenta, followed by a contrast check for the first picture.

I like the color pop, but the image is becoming slightly muddier, which might draw off focus from the central image. If I continue posting, I'll be sure to provide greyscale depictions of all future ideas to ensure that the image remains sufficiently high-contrast.

I agree that ourboros is too edgy, I don't mind the bird idea, but it is rapidly becoming modern corporate looking art which I am not a fan of. If I were a graphic designer I would do a black silhouette of a toucan sitting on a branch with the sun behind it in orange or another sunset color creating the O for ourchan. Change the color palate and you could make it fashwave or whatever. You could create different banner ideas with the sun being the O in ourchan and the silhouette could change. Everything from the rising sun of japan to the sunwheel of europe.

fuck it, I vote Sun as the O in ourchan.

Ideas are great and all, but quite frankly, I only care what other artists create and upload here. They have the experience and know-how. Spouting ideas is nothing compared to actually putting some skin in the game; even if it's a shitty 5 minute MS paint-job, I still respect it.

The other ultimate key factor is what the owners decide. It ends with them. I'm very anti-democratic, and no good decisions are made by committee. Everything of top-tier quality comes from one individual or a few working together, from almost everything I've ever seen.

I've seen some excellent competition from these two threads, and seeing other people's work forced me to step up my game a lot. All that matters, in the end, is that we have a functional, attractive logo. Luce pretty much wins hands-down for /our/ Yotsuba, the white toucan is facing competition with the ouroboros, and we have good 'corporate' style logos if the decision is made to fly under the radar for now.
