[Hide] (510.5KB, 1864x3068) Reverse I`ve found about Carlyle through forgotten serbian philosopher Božidar Knežević.
Knežević translated following works to serbian language:
>On Heroes and Hero Worship and the Heroic in History, Thomas Carlyle
>History of Civilization in England, Henry Thomas Buckle
Later i have read almost entire wikipedia page of Carlyle and i can say he was a based Scottish racist man, had a boner for German Teutonic spirit and stuff like that. Hitler also liked him and he was anti semetic.
Now Božidar is an interesting figure since he pretty much tried to bring European/English and somewhat racist and faustian thought to Serbia, but no one gave a fuck, so he was forgotten and completely memory-holed from serbian consciousness. We havent had anyone like him ever since. He died in 1905.
An interesting exchange between serbian satirist and journalist Radoje Domanović (often called serbian Jonathan Swift) and Božidar Knežević which was recounted by Domanović in his paper "Stradija" on 10. April 1905, goes like this:
About the unjust judgment, that great philosopher, a disappointed, broken soul, Bozha Knezhevitch once said to me very painfully:
— Do you see, Radoye, what is happening, in God`s name ? Do you see?
I see, unfortunately!
— That, in the name of God, we are a bunch of gypsies in which there are very, very, few honest people. We are petty, for God's sake, miserable, petty... to fight!? With whom? Those are all bedbugs in our society, small and annoying bedbugs, which burrow under your skin. It hurts, blood is dripping, but you can't see, for God`s sake, you can't see. You feel like they have bitten off all your skin, that it hurts you, but you don't have stength, you can't fight! — Bozha said painfully, and fell silent. He threw his head back proudly, in his own way , ran his fingers through his hair a few times, hooting, hooting, in his own special way:
— Oh, hoy, hoy, my God!
— Well, I said, we're not the great, but…
— Leave it for God's sake. We're vile, nasty, we're not worthy of being called human… Do you understand this: This country is not worthy of a man going out into it. It's not even that worthy, do you understand? … Oh my God, it's not even worthy of that much honor, by God! Let's go, Radoye! … Ugh, how nasty we are! A bunch of gypsies, that's our country.
God, God, how bitter this is, it's even more true.
People, like Bozha was, are slowly suffocating in our sociey`s awful stench.
(translated by me, original article name is called "Our Villany" and this is last part from it).
A lot of good frontiers in Europe were lost since then.
Also here is a transcript of presentation by Jayant Bhandari called "Understanding India" and "Dead Sea" short story by Domanović translated to english by me. it is also relevant to all of this.
