It's pretty bad for most of the books I need because they are usually digitized in a way that makes the file size explode and the download speeds are slow on that website. For reference,
A book on archive.org: 300 mb-3 gb
The same book on Library Genesis: 3-15 mb.

I always go with the small file sizes because I can get them quickly and the pdf readers are less likely to having page rendering lag when flipping through pages. If I can't flip through pages quickly on my phone and laptop, it's very frustrating.
Most of the books I wanted weren't downloadable on archive.org but were on libgen.
Speaking of, is libgen down? I can't access any of their domains.

You must not be trying hard enough. (Or you need a different mirror.) I usually use libgen.is, though I see The Shadow Library Uptime Monitor (https://open-slum.org/) says it's down (and as are some other mirrors) however
https://libgen.gs/
https://libgen.la/
https://libgen.gl/
https://libgen.bz/
https://libgen.vg/
All seem to currently be in operation right now.

They are pretty dodgy with VPNs.
Anna's archive is my go-to these days, I used to prodigiously DL from IA, but they started requiring an account to get anything other than the ""SAMPLE"" version of most media.
The best thing about the old IA was the ability to DL Daisy files(Kindle) but since I'm just going to root a couple old K-Fires, I'll just read then in PDF form as well.
*Note to PDF users: Adobe is now fully BigBrothered, Sumatra works just as well and doesn't monitor, Changefile, nor "Phone-home"
LibGen is good too, if you swap around your VPN server until you find one that works well.
GutenburgProject seems to be going the IA route.

Seconded, i have to donate a bit, great service overall.
If you're good with the API and stick to public domain content you can easily end up with multiple terabytes on any major subject you want
