there's everything from directly threading the suppressor on to the barrel to various "quick detach" systems where the suppressor has a mechanism that interfaces with a muzzle device and then locks in place.  I have experience with both surefire and knights armament quick detach systems and I like both.  direct thread can loosen while shooting, there's a bunch of pros and cons for both, with the cons of QD being mostly weight.
