Suppose there is an EMP event like a big solar flare or WW3 where China, USA, Russia, and European countries use EMP weapons that damage internet and cellular communications.
What then? will we go back to simple SW transmitters and receivers?
If you keep your cellphone in a Faraday bag, it doesn't mean all the cellular telecom and internet infrastructure will be intact.
Before you are all 'oh it won't damage things that badly', then what if the infrastructure gets hit with a missile proper?
Like the Fallout 3 trailer: "Prepare for the future!!"

A complete blackout would be really hard without space warfare now that LEO Internet services like Starlink is slowly becoming more accessible. That can be used as a REALLY dogshit backhaul for cell towers not hit.

That said it would be pretty grim for the first couple of weeks if not months before all this can be jerry rigged and if the government handed out phones they MIGHT have dual-core CPUs if we're lucky so yeah farraday cage what you can.

Ill just walk to the 5G tower or Costco to charge my phone. Duh... Ha Dumbass.
Isn't this what meshtastic and keeping essential gear in a true faraday is for? And of course radio, as you said. In such an instance your immediate circumstances matter much more than the big picture anyways for short term survival. These discussions end up in community watch type networks since that is the only satisfactory security arrangement possible.

How long does it take for residual high-energy EM radiation to dissipate after a typical EMP blast, anyway? Devices could very well get fried when they're taken out of the faraday bags.

It's gone instantly. It's not like radioactive fallout where dust is deposited everywhere that continuously spits out radiation. It's quite literally like a big light that flashes on for a fraction of a second, and is then gone.

You are correct; but there could be multiple EMP events. If there is EMP war between USA and China for example, multiple warheads could be detonated at multiple times.
Would be wise to construct a tube regenerative radio, perhaps; or a small transistor regen receiver and have multiple BJT's in your Faraday bag. Or both.
I think it would be stressful to be in your locale and not have any outside information what is going on. OTOH that's the way things usually were in history...

my understanding on the topic is that everyone has access to a decent faraway cage: their own microwave oven. when your old microwave oven dies, just keep it, store it in the basement and put any electronics in there that you want to save.

if you seriously want to go full low-tech prep, i saw a demonstration a few years back of an underground air storage powered by windmill. The wind turbine spun, pushed air into a pressurized air tank. when the user wanted to power anything, they released air from the tank which spun a turbine and generated power. a safety valve allows for the tank not to explode.

supposedly if you can last 2-3 weeks and are over 100k from major cities or strategic targets you will survive the initial attacks and fallout. Comms are a problem, but the key one is producing long range food production arrangements. The entire world logistics supply system would be disrupted, things would revert to local arrangement despite this being unable to sustain most populations. Massive famine and lawlessness would result, killing countless for probably months to come.

EMP comms is just a nice extra, like having a television receiver. Do you have a network of people trained to operate them? Everyone running an effective, tested, faraday? Is there a real reason why you need to talk to someone 40-80k away?

Hey that's pretty slick!
And here I was thinking hooking up an old Aerodyne to a small alternator was a good "2 birbs with 1 stone" thing.(exercise and power)
One thing I definitely need to get on is Taking the 2 old 1st Gen Kindle Fires I have rooted and made into just being PDF readers and video players--Then getting a bunch of thumb drives and making libraries of info/whathaveyou, (kek mebbe even some Pr0n,) for trade. All to be stashed in a faraday of sorts.
Might be a big hit at the Ol' Trading post and watering hole.
Anyone have a good sauce for altering one of those Kindles? I have several different utilities, but you tend to run into the same standard "here's how you DO" bullshit that doesn't really get rid of the stuff I want it to.
IDGAF about WiFi, and would actually prefer NOT to have it.
I wonder if there is a decent Linux OS for them yet--It has been after all 13 years.

what about shipping containers? can they act as faraday cages?

I live in one (has a window) and it doesn't get phone reception.
So I think it's partially blocking.

who's laughing now motherfuckers?
That map makes no sense, Oklahoma has TAFB, one of the biggest Air Logitistics Commands in the country, the Russians are gonna flatten it in any nuclear war, yet the map says low fallout in that region.

Redpill me about living in a shipping container.

What if the entire EMP event is caused by Elon satélites? They are all around the globe, and also by then btfo this entire system and still holding grasp of Elon satélites they would totally have the upper hand against us humans/got cattle, it's like they will have total advantage in technology and somewhat with information.
