I don't think there's a nice way to explain, genetically, that it's only been about 200 years since contact and that the original population who lived as hybrid hunter-gatherers hasn't had time to change much. Conditions were brutal, they lived hard lives and were not being selected by evolution for intelligence. A while back I was doing primary source work with the local Indians, the things that were written in authentic first encounter source material was often so brutal that stupid white baizou academics felt the need to accuse the authors as racists. I have to note this totem pole was made to 'commigrate' the children that were 'lost'; TO the residential schools.

Many North American Indians are admixed Europeans. The R1b you see on the map here is European genetics.... it was so prolific in eastern North American Indians that genetic researchers thought Whites had colonized North America at some point. Most believe it is simply intermarriage. If you are West Coast native, which it sounds like, your closest genetic relatives are in Asia. You probably have more in common with Kazakhs and Mongols than North Americans. They look fairly similar in photographs if you start checking into it.

Residential schools are just going to be one of the endless fracture points. If you want to get outside the Indian mentality, get out of their politics and get off the reserve. The issue is complicated, obviously, but residetial schooling was a fairly mild punishment on the sliding scale of history

this book is extremely boring but has a few chapters that explain what actually went on in residential schools by the tail end of it. They were just christian religious schools. Later ones had native studies type components and were hardly oppressive institutions. The major problem with residential schools was rape and sexual abuse, which did happen but I seriously doubt was endemic. Many biographies of survivors simply talk about how they were physically disciplined for disobedience or in some cases women were raped. Of course all old time schools used physical discipline, and english boarding schools also had problems with sexual abuse.

This is hard to understand but a settlement was won, because of Maurice Law Firm; Agreed price of 7-8 percent of the win.
       They win more then a billion. Then go to court to try and take away the 7-8 million in fees, that Maurice Law Firm fought for.
            Went to court for; a long time and they got the Redskins a victory.
