I don't think there's a nice way to explain, genetically, that it's only been about 200 years since contact and that the original population who lived as hybrid hunter-gatherers hasn't had time to change much. Conditions were brutal, they lived hard lives and were not being selected by evolution for intelligence. A while back I was doing primary source work with the local Indians, the things that were written in authentic first encounter source material was often so brutal that stupid white baizou academics felt the need to accuse the authors as racists.
